Zhangjiakou
Zhangjiakou
Zhangjiakou is a small mining town situated at an old passway through the Great Wall where I spent the Chinese Spring Festival. Rough and remote, Zhangjiakou typifies the stretches of industrial communities of the North, one of the hundreds of old legacies of Chinese history become a shell of production and coal.

In Buddhism, there is a kind of impassive beauty in all things, and in the grit of Zhangjiakou there is something of a persistent splendour. As a visitor to China, I was fortunate to experience a city that was not prepackaged for foreign consumption: I felt a connection with China in Zhangjiakou that is rare for any foreigner.
