Yueyang is quite simply Hunan's
jewel, a shoreside town on a beautiful lake, home of a famous literary
landmark, the Yueyang Tower, and the appealingly-labelled silver needle
tea. Dim and peaceful beside the lake waters, Yueyang's distinction is
its serene atmosphere and unassuming ambience, giving it a mood that is
not yet totally remote but still seems far away from big-city China and
all its growing pains.
It's not all traditional towers,
though: there is a modern city centre with a regular downtown vibe that
gives visitors to Yueyang a two-sided experience and a balanced travelling
itinerary. Streetside restaurants are as smalltown Hunanese as they come,
but energetic nightclubs are not far away either, and it's all within walking
distance along the lakeside.
