Tianjin
Tianjin
Just where the Hai River makes its last dash for the ocean, Tianjin stands as a centre away from the capital, poised on the waterfront as an intermediary between Beijing and the sea. These days it is a focal point in its own right, which enjoys a status of independence from the provincial government and which has a flavour distinct from anywhere else in the region.

Part of this unique character stems from its mixed colonial history: yet walk along one of its many streets littered in old European mansions and you will turn a corner into a labyrinth of ash-grey Qing Dynasty old homesteads. Despite this, Tianjin is well known within China for its own distinctions, not the least of which being its assortment of snack foods and steamed buns peculiar to the city.
