Shenyang
Shenyang
Shenyang is gritty and austere, saturated in history, the capital of Liaoning province and my home in China. I stayed in a homestay-style situation during my first months in China with the family of a close Chinese friend I'd met in Auckland, and it was here that I picked up my rudimentary Mandarin.

Shenyang gets a bad rap - its years of industrial overload has left it very polluted, and the snow is blackish within hours of first fall - and yet there is far more to this place, a city which preserves a thoroughly old character and culture, a genuine China in an era of Westernisation.
