Simultaneously the most hated
and the most loved city in the country, Shanghai is the Economic heart
of China, could it ever be described as having a heart. Shanghai is the
denizen of China's most exploitative nationals and foreign 'friends', and
the locals are infamous in their arrogance towards the rest of the entire
Chinese people: yet there is a genuine Shanghai culture there to be appreciated
if you're looking for it.
It's simply too big and there are
too many people for it to be all bad, and a midnight stroll along the bund,
if you can pick a night when the hawkers will leave you alone, is an experience
to be treasured. Any knowledge of history, however, will reveal Shanghai
to be the progeny of old corruption, which casts its legacy as the goliath
of Chinese business in dubious light.
