A small town in Hunan, Huaihua
is usually only visited by tourists who are changing trains - it's the
major rail intersection in the region. Huaihua is a modest town with few
attractions of note, but in that it is genuinely Hunanese and is well connected
in terms of transport links, it has its own appeal. I had half a day to
wander freely through the town, and remember its wet streets washed in
brick dust and positive character. Laid back and without presumption, Huaihua
is by no means unique, and yet it does enjoy a particular niche in Hunan,
and is certainly representative of the province in atmosphere and culture.
