Set on a major confluence of
the Yangtse, Chongqing is a city that has bloomed from a small town on
the slopes of a riverside peninsula into a city that has become so large
so quickly that it has been removed from the jurisdiction of its former
province of Sichuan, and awarded a semi-autonomous status.
Chongqing has unmistakable character,
and despite being at its centre a thick cluster of thin skyscrapers balanced
uncertainly on the slopes, it is at heart a traditional old place which
still hides its enchanting clutter up old, winding lanes.
