Beijing is where everything
that is essentially Chinese, be it ancient or modern, fringe art or traditional
morals get all mixed up. It is the organic face of the new China that is
not afraid of itself, the antithesis to the economic monstrosities of the
South where cash and Western culture are drowning Chinese values. Beijing
is where businessmen will slip off their shoes, put their feet on their
desks - proudly displaying the holes in the heels of their socks - tip
themselves a shot of bitter green tea and do deals as if nothing is out
of the ordinary. Far from the steely face of authoritarian China, Beijing
is breezy, lazy, friendly, ancient, high-tech, and cheeky at the same time.
